Makigami
Definitie
Visualisatie van het proces waarbij de processtappen worden gevisualiseerd, inclusief de gebruikte informatie, de benodigde tijd, de waardetoevoeging en de verspillingen. 'Makiagam' is het Japanse woord voor 'rol papier'.

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Makigami are two useful methods that can help identify and remove waste within the service industry. VSM is a pure Lean product, and tends to lose importance when applied to the service industry because WIP is equal to less frozen capital and can be transformed in terms of cycle time (Little's law). A VSM triangle indicating that a director is behind schedule by 50 documents that need to be reviewed and signed means, in a Makigami process, that this activity will require 1 month. The main difference between the two methods is that Makigami is better suited to the types of processes in the service industry.
Makigami, however, is not a tool invented by the traditional Lean Organization. Many mapping systems have been designed since the 1980s, when the principles of Business Process Reengineering were introduced, to improve transactional processes, including: cross functional flowchart, metrics-based flow (MBF) or metrics-based process map (MBPM). These methods make mapping easy and improve Makigami considerably. Together with VSM, they are among the most efficient methods to identify and reduce waste.

Makigami (het Japanse woord voor ‘rol papier’) visualiseert de processen waarvan het product of de dienst niet direct zichtbaar is, bijvoorbeeld bij administratieve of dienstverlenende processen. Deze techniek is makkelijker toe te passen dan Value Stream Mapping (VSM).
Een Makigami sessie is een krachtige en interactieve manier om vast te leggen wat er werkelijk gebeurt binnen een organisatie. Hiermee brengt u uw processtappen duidelijk in beeld, inclusief de gebruikte informatie, benodigde tijd, de waarde toevoegende stappen en de verspillingen. Bij het in kaart brengen van deze elementen worden de knelpunten en de verantwoordelijkheden in een proces snel zichtbaar.
Het opstellen van een Makigami kan het beste plaatsvinden door medewerkers die het werkproces kennen plus medewerkers die het werkproces niet kennen. We onderscheiden 4 gebieden:
- Een beschrijving van de activiteiten, uitgevoerd door diverse functies;
- documenten en systemen die in het proces worden gebruikt;
- tijdsanalyse van de doorlooptijd, waardetoevoegingen en verspillingen in het proces;
- knelpunten in of tussen processtappen.
